Frequently Asked Questions about Pediatric Eye Examinations

Why are dilating eye drops necessary for the Mother-Child Pass eye examination?

To be able to conduct a comprehensive examination, on the one hand, all anatomical structures in the eye (from the cornea and the lens to the retina and the optic nerve) must be examined and, on the other hand, a determination of farsightedness or nearsightedness (by means of retinoscopy) must be performed; this can only be done with dilated pupils (in mydriasis).

When should the second Mother-Child Pass eye examination take place?

According to the mother-child pass booklet, an examination is recommended between the 22nd and 26th month of life; however, if the examination is done 2 to 4 months later (provided there is no strabismus or similar condition), that is also quite sufficient. Sometimes our little patients can then even cooperate better with the vision test—which should always be tested separately for both eyes—since they are a bit older by then.

Do young children really need glasses?

The limits for when glasses should be prescribed for toddlers are set a bit more generously, as toddlers have a greater ability to accommodate. However, there are very clear guidelines regarding the refraction values at which a prescription for glasses is intended. For example, in children with strabismus (squinting), it is crucial to prescribe the full correction and thus compensate for even minor farsightedness (hyperopia). Or, in cases of differing refractive errors in both eyes, to compensate for them in order to prevent lazy eye (amblyopia).

Should the first Mother-Child Pass eye examination be performed by a pediatric ophthalmologist?

In principle, the first eye examination within the framework of the mother-child pass (between the 10th and 14th month of life) is performed by a pediatrician or a general practitioner. However, if any abnormality is found here, further evaluation by a pediatric ophthalmologist, including the use of eye drops, should be carried out in order to detect or rule out potential pathologies at an early stage.

Will the eye examination hurt my child?

No, the examination is generally not painful. We will examine your child's eyes calmly and in a child-friendly manner, explaining each step so that no unnecessary uncertainty arises. Putting the drops in can be briefly unpleasant or sting a little, but it is important so that the eye can be examined completely.

What if my child does not cooperate during the examination?

That is completely fine and very common, especially with young children. We will take our time and try to carry out the examination in a playful way and without pressure. Often, a lot is accomplished during the first appointment—and if certain things are not possible right away, we will discuss together whether and when a follow-up examination makes sense.
