Small tick, big risk: why children need special protection
Many children play outdoors, especially in spring and summer - this is precisely the time when Ticks particularly active. Even a single small tick bite can cause the TBE virus (tick-borne encephalitis).
The infection usually progresses in two phases: First, flu-like symptoms such as fever, headache and aching limbs occur. In the second phase, a dangerous meningitis can occur, which in the worst cases can lead to long-term permanent damage.
Almost all Austria is a TBE risk area! Up to 10 percent of all ticks are carriers of the pathogen. There is a particular risk of being bitten in forests or meadows - but also in city parks, where you might not expect it. Children who spend a lot of time outdoors and enjoy playing outside are particularly at risk of infection.
Reliable protection against ticks
Fortunately, the risk of contracting TBE can be significantly reduced by vaccination. Vaccination is possible from the age of 1, is well tolerated by children and offers reliable protection against the pathogen.
Important to know: A total of three partial vaccinations against ticks are required for complete vaccination protection. In order to maintain long-term immunity, the vaccination must also be boostered at regular intervals.
