What is a functional heart murmur?
Functional heart murmurs are caused by normal blood flow in a healthy heart and are very common in children. They are not a sign of heart disease and do not require treatment. In contrast, organic heart murmurs can indicate heart defects or other structural changes. An echocardiogram can reliably distinguish between the two. Does an echocardiogram hurt? Is there radiation exposure? No. An ultrasound is completely painless and radiation-free. A transducer is placed on the skin with some gel. Your children can sit or lie on their parents' laps in a relaxed manner during the procedure.
Is an EKG painless for children?
Yes. An ECG is a painless examination. Small electrodes are attached to the skin and measure the electrical signals of the heart. The examination only takes a few minutes and is suitable for children of all ages. In special cases, a 24-hour Holter monitor can provide further information.
At what age can an echocardiogram be performed?
An echocardiogram can be performed from the first day of life. It is particularly valuable in newborns, as congenital heart defects can be detected early. The examination is radiation-free, painless, and takes between 15 and 30 minutes, depending on the specific question.
Do we need a referral for pediatric cardiology?
Since "Glückskind" is a private practice, you do not need a referral. You can schedule an appointment directly. Please bring any previous medical records and the mother-child pass with you. After your visit, we will issue an invoice that you can submit to your health insurance provider.
How many patients are treated in the pediatric cardiology practice?
In our pediatric cardiology practice, we treat patients from newborns up to 18 years of age. Since we operate by appointment, we can dedicate ample time to each child and their family.
What types of heart defects can occur in children?
The most common congenital heart defects are holes in the heart walls (septal defects), narrowed heart valves or the aorta, and malformations of the major blood vessels. In addition, there are also other heart conditions such as myocarditis or high blood pressure.
60-80 percent of all severe heart defects are recognized prenatally. Together with pulse oximetry screening, the vast majority of severe heart defects are detected. However, since not all of them are detected, it is important to have an examination done if symptoms (as described above) occur.
